The Ekiti State Government has banned the popular “sign-out” celebrations in all secondary schools across the state’s 16 local government areas.

According to the government, the practice is considered inappropriate, disruptive, and contrary to the values of discipline, orderliness, and decency expected of students.

The directive was announced in a circular issued by the Ekiti State Ministry of Education and signed on behalf of the Permanent Secretary by Mrs. Adenike Akinyemi. The ministry explained that the decision followed reports of students engaging in “sign-out” activities after completing their external examinations.

These celebrations typically involve students splashing ink on one another, writing farewell messages on school uniforms, and taking part in other activities the government described as indecent and unacceptable.

The ministry expressed concern that some of these celebrations have gone beyond harmless fun, with cases of harassment, molestation, and other inappropriate behaviour that could endanger students and damage the reputation of schools.

It warned that the practice would no longer be tolerated, adding that any student or school found encouraging or participating in such activities would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

The circular stated that the Ministry of Education had received reports of students engaging in acts such as ink-splashing, writing on uniforms, harassment, molestation, and other forms of misconduct under the guise of “sign-out” celebrations. It emphasized that the practice is unacceptable in Ekiti State and would attract sanctions.

To ensure full compliance with the directive, all secondary school principals have been instructed to maintain discipline within their schools and ensure students conduct themselves responsibly at all times.

The ministry also directed school administrators to uphold proper decorum and promote good behaviour among students.

The ban is part of the Ekiti State Government’s broader efforts to strengthen discipline in schools, protect students from harmful excesses, and uphold the integrity and values of the state’s education system.
