Applications are now open for the 2026 National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition, inviting secondary school students, tertiary institution students, and NYSC members across Nigeria to share their ideas on financial independence, retirement planning, and pension reform.

The competition seeks to encourage young Nigerians to think about the future of retirement in Nigeria and explore how today’s decisions, policies, and innovations can create better retirement experiences.

Outstanding essays will be shortlisted for national recognition, academic prizes, honours, and awards, with winners recognised during the National Pension Week gala ceremonies.

Competition Details

The National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition 2026 is organised as part of National Pension Week to encourage young people to engage with issues surrounding pension literacy, financial independence, retirement planning, and the future of retirement in Nigeria.

Participants are invited to put their ideas into writing and explain how individual choices, government policies, and innovations can contribute to improved retirement experiences for Nigerians.

The competition is open to eligible students in recognised Nigerian secondary and tertiary institutions, as well as serving NYSC members.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled in a recognised secondary school in Nigeria; OR
  • Be a currently enrolled student of a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution; OR
  • Be a serving NYSC member.
  • Submit only one essay.
  • Be the original author of the submitted work.
  • Provide accurate school, institution, or NYSC information.
  • Complete verification if shortlisted.
  • Meet all submission requirements before the deadline.

Employees of PenCom, members of the competition judging panel, direct competition administrators, and their immediate dependants may be ineligible where a conflict of interest exists.

Essay Topics and Prizes

Category A — Secondary School

Topic: My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria

  • Maximum Length: 500 words
  • Prize: ₦1,000,000 + Laptop + Trophy + Certificate

Category B — Tertiary Institutions & NYSC

Topic: My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria

  • Maximum Length: 1,000 words

The competition offers participants an opportunity to gain national recognition, honours, awards, and academic prizes for outstanding submissions.

Submission Requirements

Essays must meet the following requirements:

  • Accepted formats include typed text, PDF, and DOCX.
  • Maximum upload size is 10 MB.
  • Essays must be original works created specifically for the competition.
  • Any copied material without proper attribution may lead to disqualification.
  • Quotations and factual references should be appropriately acknowledged.
  • The organisers may conduct plagiarism and originality checks.
  • Shortlisted participants may be asked to provide an oral explanation of their work.

Verification Process

Shortlisted participants may be required to complete verification by providing:

  • Student identification and school or institution details.
  • School letter or portal evidence where applicable.
  • NYSC identity evidence for serving corps members.
  • Institution confirmation or live/video identity verification where required before prizes are awarded.

Judging Process

Entries will go through an assessment process that may include:

  • Administrative eligibility checks.
  • Removal of personally identifying information from copies reviewed by judges.
  • Independent scoring by at least three judges per shortlisted entry, where feasible.
  • Normalisation and aggregation of scores by the Competition Secretariat.
  • Conflict-of-interest declarations by judges.
  • Final verification of authorship and student status.
  • Final approval of winners by the authorised Competition Committee.
