Scholarship Details
The University of Arkansas Monticello Scholarship 2026 is a fully funded Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) offered through the Snowden Waterfowl Center of Excellence in the College of Forestry, Agriculture, and Natural Resources.
The assistantship is focused on Forest Resources with an emphasis on Wildlife Management, specifically researching the spatial arrangement of bottomland hardwood reforestation and its impact on habitat suitability for midcontinent mallards. The selected candidate will pursue a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree while contributing to an innovative research project that explores the relationship between wetland reforestation, carbon sequestration, and waterfowl conservation.
As part of the research, the successful applicant will help develop an ArcGIS Online decision-support tool that identifies priority areas for reforestation to maximize both carbon storage and wildlife conservation benefits. This opportunity combines academic study with hands-on research in geospatial analysis, conservation, and ecosystem restoration.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the University of Arkansas Monticello Scholarship, applicants must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geospatial Sciences, Geography, Wildlife Management/Conservation, Zoology, or a related field.
- Have a minimum 2.7 cumulative undergraduate GPA or 3.0 GPA in the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study.
- Have experience with GIS, remote sensing, data science, landscape ecology, or waterfowl research (preferred).
- Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license or be able to obtain one within 60 days of starting employment.
- Be willing to undertake overnight travel and participate in fall/winter fieldwork.
- Be able to work outdoors under various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in wildlife ecology, conservation, or wildlife management.
- Experience with remote sensing, spatial modeling, or decision-support tools.
- Programming knowledge in Python or R.
- Knowledge of carbon accounting, forestry, or ecosystem restoration.
