The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that a significant majority of candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scored below the 200-mark benchmark.

According to the statistical breakdown released on Monday, out of the 1,955,069 candidates who participated in the examination, only 420,415 scored above 200. This means that 75% of the candidates fell below the 200 mark, with less than 1% recording scores above 300.

Among the total, 40,247 underage candidates were granted the opportunity to demonstrate their academic potential. However, just 467 of them—1.16%—met the threshold set by JAMB to be classified as exceptionally gifted. Their full assessment is still ongoing, as they are yet to complete three additional evaluation stages.

JAMB also highlighted issues that affected the conduct of the examination. A total of 97 candidates were confirmed to have been involved in exam infractions, while 2,157 are currently under investigation for suspected malpractice.

Absenteeism was another concern, with 71,701 candidates failing to appear for the exam. Candidates with unresolved biometric issues are undergoing further verification, and those who are cleared will be rescheduled to take the exam at specific centres.

Additionally, the results of certain groups, including blind candidates and others classified under the JEOG category, are still being processed.

JAMB noted that a press briefing will be held later this week to provide further updates and activate result-checking portals for candidates.
