Fellowship Details
The Wang Gungwu Fellowship invites young scholars and policymakers to examine major global power relations and their influence on Southeast Asia through policy-oriented research and academic discussions.
During the fellowship, selected participants will contribute to publications such as ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum in their respective research areas. Fellows will also present their research findings through seminars and become part of a regional research network connected to the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute even after the fellowship concludes.
The programme focuses on several important research themes, including:
- US-China relations and their impact on Southeast Asia
- Security challenges in the Asia-Pacific region
- Regional and global economic cooperation initiatives
- China’s growing influence on Southeast Asian societies
- The role of digital technology in shaping political interests and public perception in Southeast Asia
Through this fellowship programme, the institute aims to support researchers and policymakers working on issues related to regional stability, security, economic development, and international policy. The fellowship also encourages practical research that can contribute to solving challenges affecting Southeast Asia.
The Wang Gungwu Fellowship is intended for postdoctoral researchers and mid-career policymakers who can complete their proposed projects during the 2–6 month residential programme in Singapore.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Wang Gungwu Fellowship, applicants must:
- Be postdoctoral researchers or mid-career policymakers
- Have strong research interest in Southeast Asia and international policy issues
- Be willing to contribute to policy research and academic discussions during the fellowship

Mid-career policymakers without a PhD may also apply if they possess relevant professional experience and research interests.
