Scholarship Details
The University of Canberra Research Scholarships provide a limited number of awards to highly qualified candidates undertaking full-time study towards a Higher Degree by Research (HDR).
The scholarship programme is available to both domestic and international applicants and is administered by the University’s Graduate Research team.
Scholarships are awarded through the University Research Scholarship Committee, which considers applications for Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships and UC Higher Degree by Research Stipend Scholarships.
Applicants are assessed competitively, with academic achievement, research experience, research proposals, and alignment with the University’s strategic research priorities considered during the selection process.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the University of Canberra Research Scholarship 2027, applicants must:
- Be an international or domestic student.
- Domestic eligibility includes Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens.
- Be eligible for admission to an approved Higher Degree by Research/PhD programme at the University of Canberra.
- Not have previously held an Australian Government-funded research scholarship for more than six months.
- Meet the University’s academic and admission requirements for the proposed research degree.
Priority may be given to:
- Applicants approved for PhD admission with an Australian First-Class Honours degree, or an equivalent qualification or Recognised Prior Learning (RPL).
- Applicants whose Master’s by coursework includes a research project worth at least 25% of the programme with a result of at least 80.
- Current PhD candidates who have successfully completed Confirmation of Candidature and have completed less than two years of candidature at the beginning of the relevant semester.
- Applicants approved for the National Industry PhD Program – Industry Linked stream.
- Indigenous Australian applicants approved for admission to a PhD.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful scholarship recipients may receive:
- A tax-free stipend of AUD $36,225 per year based on the 2025 rate, to assist with living expenses.
- Scholarship support for up to 3.5 years.
- Eligible international candidates may receive tuition fee sponsorship to cover their tuition fees.
- Access to research opportunities and resources at the University of Canberra.
- The opportunity to undertake full-time doctoral research in Australia.
- The opportunity to contribute to research aligned with the University’s strategic priorities.
International candidates approved to commence their research while offshore will not receive their stipend until they are able to undertake their research onshore. Eligible payments will be backdated once they arrive at the University of Canberra’s Bruce campus.
How to Apply
To apply for the University of Canberra Research Scholarship 2027:
- Review the eligibility requirements and identify a suitable Higher Degree by Research programme.
- Prospective domestic and international PhD candidates must first apply for HDR admission through the University of Canberra’s HDR Application Portal.
- Once the HDR admission application has been submitted, eligible applicants will receive access to a separate Research Scholarship application form.
- Current University of Canberra PhD candidates may also apply for a Research Scholarship through the HDR Application Portal.
- Complete the scholarship application and provide the required academic and research documents.
- Scholarship applications will first be assessed for completeness and eligibility for PhD admission.
- Eligible applications will then be forwarded to the relevant faculty for academic assessment and ranking.
- Faculties will rank applicants based on factors including academic qualifications, strategic alignment, research proposal, and research experience.
- The University Research Scholarship Committee will review the faculty rankings and award scholarships to the highest-ranked applicants according to the order of merit.
