Scholarship Details

The Polar Remote Sensing Research Group at McGill University is recruiting at least one MSc and one PhD student to conduct research on radar remote sensing of Arctic sea ice, with the positions beginning in Fall 2027. The graduate positions are fully funded through a combination of awards and research and teaching assistantships.

The research group also provides opportunities for undergraduate students interested in sea ice remote sensing research. Its work focuses on developing innovative remote sensing technologies for improved sea ice monitoring, supported by field-based research conducted in the Arctic region.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the McGill University Research opportunities, applicants must:

  • Meet the entry requirements for the Department of Geography.
  • Meet McGill University’s English language requirements.
  • Have experience in scientific programming and handling remote sensing data.

PhD Position

The PhD research will focus on radar analysis of Arctic sea ice using multi-frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Applicants should have:

  • An MSc in remote sensing, geography, physics, engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience with radar data and an understanding of backscatter and polarimetry.
  • Advanced programming skills.
  • Experience working with large raster datasets, cloud platforms, or machine learning is an advantage.
  • An interest in participating in Arctic field campaigns.
  • Strong scientific writing skills, preferably with a first-author publication or manuscript in preparation.

MSc Position

The MSc research will focus on using SAR to characterize sea ice in the Canadian Arctic. Previous radar experience is welcome but not required. Applicants should have:

  • A BSc in geography, environmental science, physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Advanced programming skills.
  • Coursework or project experience involving satellite imagery is an advantage.
  • A background in remote sensing, GIS, or geophysics.
  • An interest in Arctic fieldwork.
  • Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given preference for this position.

Scholarship Benefits

Graduate students selected for the funded positions will receive:

  • Tuition fee support for the duration of the program.
  • A monthly stipend to help cover living expenses.

Undergraduate research students may also access funding through research grants and programs such as SURA and NSERC USRA, subject to eligibility and available funding.
