Scholarship Details
The LASOMA Scholarship, meaning Lasers for Net-Zero Solar Systems Manufacture, is an Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme funded by the European Union in collaboration with the African Union.
The programme is a major African research and scholarship initiative focused on building expertise in sustainable solar systems manufacturing through advanced laser-based technologies integrated with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data science.
The LASOMA Scholarship is delivered through a partnership involving six institutions across four countries and offers fully funded 2-year Masters and 3-year PhD programmes for qualified African students. The initiative aims to strengthen research capacity, innovation, and sustainable energy development across Africa.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the LASOMA Masters and PhD Scholarships, applicants must:
- Be a national and resident of an African country at the time of application
- Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant Engineering discipline
- Demonstrate strong academic and research potential
- Meet the admission and language requirements of the selected host university
- Not have previously benefited from any Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme (2022–2027) scholarship
- Have research interests aligned with LASOMA focus areas such as laser manufacturing, solar systems, and climate change
- Applicants from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply, including women and persons with special needs
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of the European Union LASOMA Scholarship will receive:
- Full tuition fees funded by the European Commission
- Monthly stipend for living expenses throughout the programme
- €1,230 monthly stipend for PhD students
- €890 monthly stipend for Masters students
- Medical insurance coverage
- Access to research consumables and equipment at partner universities
- Travel support for research visits, preparatory school, and conferences
- Access to industry partners and advanced laser manufacturing facilities
- Participation in the LaSoMa Preparatory Graduate School for technical and soft skills training
