The Federal Ministry of Education has entered into a strategic collaboration with the National Population Commission to incorporate birth registration and demographic information into Nigeria’s school enrolment and educational planning frameworks.
The development was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement shared on X by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.
According to the statement, the Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, stressed that reliable population statistics are vital for effective school location planning, equitable teacher distribution, precise enrolment forecasting, and fair allocation of educational resources.
He explained that making birth registration part of the school admission process would help ensure appropriate age placement for pupils and enhance the credibility of academic records.
The minister further clarified that enforcement measures would only begin after registration services have been sufficiently expanded across the country, so families are not unfairly disadvantaged. He also underscored the importance of digital integration in boosting transparency, monitoring enrolment trends, and detecting dropouts at an early stage.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Aminu Yusuf, reaffirmed the commission’s responsibility for managing Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system. He revealed that over 4,000 registration centres are currently operational nationwide, with digital enhancement initiatives ongoing.
The statement added that both agencies have agreed to set up a Joint Technical Working Group to align verification processes and ensure seamless interoperability between their databases.
The partnership, it noted, reflects the Federal Government’s dedication to data-driven education reforms and inclusive national development.
