The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has called on members of the public to ignore a viral letter alleging that security operatives would be stationed at examination centres across the country.

The examination body clarified that the document is fake and was not issued by WAEC or any of its offices.

In a statement released on Friday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, WAEC explained that the forged letter was dated May 27, 2026, and carried the reference number L/SED/12/DIST/VOL. 4/460.

According to the fake document, school proprietors and principals were informed that officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps would be deployed to examination centres nationwide beginning from June 1, 2026.

WAEC, however, stated that the signature of Mr. S. D. Kum, the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration, was fraudulently attached to the document.

The council described the letter as the handiwork of fraudsters and individuals seeking to create confusion among stakeholders in the education sector.

WAEC noted that the aim of the false information was to cause unnecessary fear, disrupt the smooth conduct of the ongoing school-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and mislead school owners, principals, parents, candidates, supervisors, and invigilators.

The examination body urged all concerned parties to completely disregard the contents of the viral letter, insisting that no such security directive had been issued.

WAEC further reassured candidates and stakeholders that the 2026 WASSCE for school candidates is continuing smoothly as originally scheduled.

The council concluded by wishing all candidates success in their ongoing examinations.
