The Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has released a revised academic calendar for the 2025/2026 session, confirming that all public primary and secondary schools across the state will resume classes on Monday, July 6, 2026, for the continuation of the current academic session. The announcement was contained in a circular dated July 2, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye.

According to the circular, the resumed academic term will run for six weeks and end on Friday, August 14, 2026.

At the end of the term, students and teachers will proceed on a four-week holiday beginning from Monday, August 17, 2026, to Friday, September 11, 2026.

The ministry also confirmed that the first term of the 2026/2027 academic session will commence on Monday, September 14, 2026.The revised calendar applies to all public primary and secondary schools across Oyo State and follows the disruption caused by the recent strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).The month-long industrial action, which began on June 1, 2026, shut down public schools across the state following the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.

The strike was suspended after discussions between the union and the Oyo State Government.

Explaining the decision to return to classrooms, NUT President, Titus Amba, said the union called off the strike because of the impact the closure was having on schoolchildren who had remained at home. The industrial action was triggered by the May 15 attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, where gunmen abducted teachers and pupils and killed two teachers. The incident sparked widespread concern and renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect schools and secure the release of the abducted victims.
