The Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a fully funded research project beginning in Spring 2027. The successful candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr. Zachary Darnell and Dr. Kelly Darnell and will conduct research focused on understanding long-term changes in seagrass ecosystems within the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

The project aims to investigate biodiversity, ecosystem productivity, and environmental drivers affecting seagrass habitats to support coastal resource management. The research will involve field sampling across Florida and Mississippi, laboratory analyses, and the evaluation of long-term ecological datasets, providing students with valuable hands-on research experience.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the University of Southern Mississippi PhD Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (an M.S. degree is preferred).
