Scholarship Details
The Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI) is an international leadership programme established to support talented young people from Sub-Saharan Africa in accessing higher education and developing the skills needed to become future leaders in their communities.
Each year, Ashinaga aims to provide higher education opportunities to 20 outstanding students from Sub-Saharan African countries, including countries facing significant economic challenges.
AAI Scholars receive financial support to pursue undergraduate degrees at universities around the world. In addition to university funding, scholars participate in leadership development and preparatory programmes designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become compassionate and effective change-makers.
The initiative is particularly focused on students who have lost one or both parents and who are committed to returning to their home countries or Sub-Saharan Africa after graduation to contribute to social and economic development.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Ashinaga Africa Initiative Scholarship 2026, applicants must:
- Have lost one or both parents.
- Have completed secondary school and received the results of their national secondary school examination within the last two years, or be completing secondary school and receive their final examination results.
- Have completed an eligible secondary education programme. Technical and vocational degrees are not accepted.
- Not have the financial means to attend university abroad without external financial assistance.
- Be proficient in English, French, or Portuguese.
- Have consistently ranked among the top 10% of their class during the last two or three years of secondary school.
- Be able to participate in the two Ashinaga preparatory programmes over the course of one year before beginning university.
- Be committed to returning to their home country or another country in Sub-Saharan Africa and contributing to society after graduation.
- Have no dependents who could interfere with their academic progress.
- Have a health condition that allows them to study abroad.

- A photo or scanned copy of at least one valid identification document:
- Passport
- National ID card
- Birth certificate
- A copy of the death or disappearance certificate of the parent(s), or another official document proving the applicant’s orphan status.
- A photo or scanned copy of the applicant’s most recent secondary school report or transcript.
- A photo or scanned copy of the baccalaureate certificate or other proof of completion of secondary education, where applicable.
- University grades/transcripts, if the applicant has already attended university.
