The Lagos State Government has announced that the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), widely known as the Junior WAEC, will take place from June 29 to July 6, 2026.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the Lagos State Examinations Board in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the board, the examination will commence on Monday, June 29, and conclude on Monday, July 6, marking an important stage in the academic progression of students across the state.
The Registrar of the Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr. Adebayo Orunsolu, described the BECE as a critical assessment that determines students’ transition from the junior to the senior secondary school level.
“The examination remains a significant academic milestone in the educational journey of students across the State,” Orunsolu said.
He called on parents, guardians and school administrators to carefully study the examination timetable and ensure strict adherence to all guidelines and instructions issued by the board.
Orunsolu explained that the BECE serves as the official qualifying examination for students seeking admission into Senior Secondary School after completing their Junior Secondary School education in both public and approved private schools across Lagos State.
“The BECE serves as the official transition examination for students in public and approved private schools advancing from Junior Secondary School to Senior Secondary School,” he stated.
The registrar stressed the need for adequate preparation by candidates, noting that schools have a responsibility to ensure that all eligible students are well prepared and meet the necessary requirements before the examination period.
He also assured stakeholders that the Lagos State Examinations Board had concluded all necessary administrative and logistical arrangements to guarantee the smooth and successful conduct of the examination across the state.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding the credibility of public examinations, Orunsolu reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards examination malpractice.
He warned that any form of malpractice, misconduct or disruption during the examination period would attract appropriate sanctions in line with established regulations.
The board expressed confidence that with adequate preparation and cooperation from all stakeholders, the 2026 BECE would be conducted successfully and maintain the standards expected of the state’s education system.
