The African Development Bank (AfDB) Internship Program provides students with a unique opportunity to acquire professional and practical experience within a leading pan-African development institution.

This program also serves as a strategic avenue for the Bank to build a pool of future recruitment prospects. Selected interns will benefit from a monthly stipend and the Bank’s medical insurance coverage throughout the internship period.

Internship Details

The AfDB Internship Program is designed to provide the financial and technical support required for transformative projects that reduce poverty and promote inclusive and sustainable economic development across Africa.

To enhance the impact of its Ten-Year Strategy (2023–2032), the Bank has identified five key focus areas to scale up operations and development delivery:

  • Energy
  • Agro-business
  • Industrialization
  • Integration
  • Improving the quality of life for the people of Africa

The Internship is part of the Bank’s Talent Management Framework, which aligns with its strategic vision and the “High 5s” agenda.

Intern selection is competitive and based on the specific needs of the Bank’s various departments.

Eligibility Criteria

To be qualified for the AfDB Internship Program, applicants must:

  • Have reached the age of majority in their country of nationality and be not more than 30 years old at the time of starting the internship
  • Be a national of an AfDB member country
  • Be currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program at a recognized higher learning institution
  • Have graduated within the past year if not currently enrolled
  • Provide a confirmation letter from their school or a copy of their Master’s degree
  • Be fluent in at least one of the Bank’s working languages (English or French)
  • Be proficient in standard software applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access (knowledge of SAP is desirable)

Internship Duration and Reward

Interns selected for the AfDB Internship Program will receive:

  • Medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship
  • Monthly stipend
  • Internship duration between three (3) to six (6) months
  • Remote or on-site internship options based on the needs of the hiring unit

Note:

  • Remote interns must have access to a personal computer, stable internet, and a conducive work environment
  • On-site interns are responsible for their airfare and upkeep
  • The Bank will assist with visa applications if required
