The federal government of Nigeria has recently announced plans for a new education policy aimed at compelling private schools across all levels to significantly reduce their fees. This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during the inaugural quarterly Citizens and Stakeholders Engagement on Nigerian Education Sector Ministerial Deliverables.
The Minister emphasized that the government is taking decisive measures to overhaul the nation’s education sector, with the intention of forcing private educational institutions to revise their fee structures. He asserted, “By the time we’re done, private schools will run out of business and scale down the amounts they’re charging our students.”
Combatting Fake Certificates and Enhancing Accreditation
Addressing concerns about fake certificates flooding the country, the Minister highlighted the establishment of a high-powered interministerial committee to tackle the issue. This committee is nearing completion of its work, with significant breakthroughs expected. The Minister assured that the ministry would strengthen its recognition and accreditation of certificates while taking action against individuals involved in the proliferation of fake certificates.
Promoting Inclusive Education and Vocational Training
Prof. Mamman revealed that over two million Almajiri children have been removed from the streets and enrolled in Arabic literacy programs to acquire basic education and vocational training. These initiatives align with the ministry’s focus on increasing access, enrollment, and retention in both basic and tertiary education levels.
Training and Scholarships
The Minister highlighted the training of 70,674 teachers and non-teaching staff in the last six months, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education. Additionally, thousands of students have benefited from Nigerian scholarship awards and bursaries, furthering their educational pursuits both domestically and abroad.
Embracing Skills and Digitization in Education
Recognizing the need to address the learning crisis in the country, Prof. Mamman emphasized the importance of infusing skills and digitization into the education system from primary school onwards. He underscored the necessity of revising the curriculum to accommodate new teaching methods that prioritize skills development and digital literacy.
Ensuring School Safety
In light of recent security challenges faced by educational institutions, including the abduction of students, the government is developing a safe school agenda to enhance security measures and protect schools and students.
