The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the temporary shutdown of its result checker portal due to technical issues. This development comes amid public concern following the release of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, which recorded a decline in performance, particularly in English Language.
The announcement was made on Wednesday evening via WAEC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, @waecnigeria. The statement read:
“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues.
However, the Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours. We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you.”
Following the release, some candidates and parents expressed concerns on social media, particularly about the performance in English Language. Several users claimed that the English paper was conducted late at night at some examination centres on May 28, and they suggested that this may have affected students’ performance.
Candidates also shared personal results online, noting significant disparities between their English scores and performance in other subjects. Some called on WAEC to consider a review of the English Language scripts.
A number of users expressed hope that the situation could be reviewed once the result checker portal is restored, while others raised questions about the grading process and transparency.
As of the time of this report, WAEC has not provided additional clarification on the grading of English Language scripts or whether there are plans for a comprehensive review. The Council has also not confirmed when the result checker portal will be fully operational again.
