WAEC Denies Issuing Directive Restricting Subjects for 2026 WASSCE

WAEC WASSCE exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports circulating on some media platforms suggesting that it has instructed schools to limit the subjects students can register for in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs for WAEC Nigeria, Mrs. Moyosola Adeshina, clarified that the council did not issue any directive restricting subject choices and has no involvement in such claims.

According to her, the information being shared is false and did not originate from WAEC. She emphasized that the council does not determine or regulate school curricula in Nigeria, as that responsibility lies solely with the Federal Government.

She explained that WAEC’s role is to assess students based on government-approved curricula, and any changes to the curriculum follow official procedures set by the government—not by WAEC’s discretion.

The council urged schools, parents, and the general public to ignore the misleading reports and rely only on official communication from WAEC for verified examination guidelines.

WAEC assured candidates that the 2026 WASSCE will be conducted fairly and that no student will be denied the opportunity to register or be assessed in their preferred subjects. Schools were also reminded to properly advise students when making subject selections, as that responsibility rests with school authorities, not WAEC.
