The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially dismissed a viral press release claiming that it had cancelled the English Language paper written on Wednesday, May 28, as part of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, WAEC described the claim as completely false and misleading. The council emphasized that it did not issue such a statement, nor did it have any intention of cancelling the examination paper.
“The paper in question, or any other, has not been cancelled,” the statement read. “Although the source of the information is yet to be identified, it is evident that the false claim is the work of mischief-makers aiming to tarnish the image of the council and create unnecessary panic among candidates.”
WAEC urged the public and stakeholders to disregard any unofficial information and reiterated that all legitimate updates are shared only through the council’s verified social media platforms and accredited media channels.
“All official press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement added. “We advise the public to ignore any information not disseminated through these channels.”
WAEC concluded by appreciating the continued trust of stakeholders and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations and serving the Nigerian education sector with excellence.
