Chizoba Ejiofor, the overall best graduating student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has been awarded a fully funded Commonwealth scholarship worth over £33,000.
Ejiofor, who graduated with a remarkable Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.98, had initially been denied a promised N50,000 academic excellence prize by the university. However, education advocate and tech entrepreneur, Alex Onyia, stepped in to support him.
Onyia, who announced the development on social media on Thursday, said he took full responsibility for Ejiofor’s academic future after learning of the unmet reward.
“I have a good news. A very good news,” Onyia wrote. “You remember Chizoba Ejiofor, who graduated as UNN overall best graduating student with CGPA of 4.98, that UNN refused to fulfill the N50k prize promised to him? I took him up as a full responsibility. We started working tirelessly together since last year to secure a fully funded scholarship, and today we have the good news.”
He confirmed that Ejiofor had now received a prestigious Commonwealth scholarship covering tuition, travel costs, and monthly stipends.
“This is fully funded scholarship from Commonwealth. Over 33 thousand pounds in scholarship, flight tickets and monthly stipends inclusive. No one can describe how happy and fulfilled I am today,” he said.
Ejiofor’s success has been widely celebrated as a testament to perseverance, mentorship, and the power of opportunity.
