UNIZIK Bans Final-Year Signing-Off Activities Over Security Concerns

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has placed an indefinite ban on the tradition of “signing off” by final-year students, citing repeated instances of chaos and security threats on campus.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, the directive takes effect immediately. The university described the measure as necessary to curb the violence and disruptions that have become associated with the celebration of final examinations.

“The university management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration (‘signing off’) related to final examinations by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the university premises,” the statement read. “This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events.”

The statement further noted that the presence of unauthorised individuals during such celebrations has raised serious safety concerns, posing risks to students, staff, and the larger university community.

“To maintain peace, protect lives, and preserve university property, the management has resolved that such activities are no longer acceptable,” it added.

The university warned that students who engage in any form of orchestration or signing-off activities would face strict disciplinary action, including rustication. In addition, outsiders caught participating in or encouraging such acts could face arrest and legal prosecution for disorderly behaviour and breach of peace.

Dr. Okeke reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe academic environment and urged students to remain focused on their studies. She also encouraged them to report any threats or incidents of misconduct to the appropriate authorities.
