The Senate of the University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students for various disciplinary violations.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob.
According to the statement, the decision was reached during the 191st Regular Meeting of the Senate held on Thursday, January 28, 2026, at the institution’s Main Campus. The action followed the Senate’s review and adoption of the report and recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
The affected students were found guilty of offences including threat to life and physical assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, involvement in cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded to the university portal for admission, and failure to honour repeated invitations from the disciplinary committee.
Yakoob further revealed that the Senate also approved the withdrawal of certificates from 15 former students who ignored multiple invitations by the committee.
However, nine students were cleared of all allegations after investigations, while 33 others were issued formal warnings for infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.
Reacting to the outcome, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s resolve to sustain a secure and conducive academic environment.
He emphasized that the institution would continue to enforce its rules and regulations firmly and without exception.
The Vice-Chancellor also praised the Student Disciplinary Committee for its thorough and meticulous handling of the cases, urging students to act responsibly and refrain from behaviour that could jeopardize their academic careers.
“The academic integrity of the University is non-negotiable, and we remain committed to ensuring that any violation attracts appropriate sanctions. Beyond enforcing discipline, our aim is to nurture responsible citizens and promote academic excellence,” he stated.
Fawehinmi added that the university would intensify student engagement initiatives, counselling services, and orientation programmes to encourage responsible conduct and reduce cases of disciplinary breaches.
