The University of Ibadan has directed 226 undergraduate students to withdraw from the institution due to low academic performance.
The decision followed a meeting of the university’s Senate last Monday, where results for the 2024/2025 academic session — covering both graduating and non-graduating students — were reviewed and approved. The Senate resolved that students with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 should be advised to withdraw.
As a result of the approval, the affected students will no longer have access to the university’s registration portal.
Those impacted span across faculties and range from 100 to 500 levels.
A university official disclosed that the Faculty of Science recorded the highest number of withdrawals, with 79 students affected. This was followed by the Faculty of Technology with 45 students and the Faculty of Agriculture with 35.
The College of Medicine and the Faculty of Education each had 18 students withdrawn, while the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources recorded 10 cases.
Other faculties affected include Arts with nine students; Economics and Management Sciences with four; Law with three; Veterinary Medicine with two; and Environmental Design and Management with three.
The withdrawal of students over unsatisfactory academic performance is a routine exercise at the institution, often referred to by students as a “tsunami.” In 2018, a total of 408 students were asked to withdraw.
Meanwhile, newly admitted students resumed physically for the 2025/2026 academic session on Monday.
