The University of Ibadan (UI), in partnership with leading Nigerian industries, has successfully held a career trade fair aimed at enhancing the employability of its students and recent graduates. The event took place on Friday at the International Conference Centre, Ibadan.
The convener of the fair, Professor Olutoyin Fashae, who also serves as Head of the Department of Geography, explained that the initiative was designed to provide students with real-world experience, mentorship, and exposure to job opportunities. She noted that the fair would help participants understand workplace expectations and better prepare them for life after graduation.
According to Fashae, UI plans to strengthen collaboration between academia and the corporate world by integrating industry knowledge into its curriculum. This, she said, would allow students to learn certain practical aspects of their fields directly from industry professionals while still in school. She encouraged students to network actively and leverage the event to explore internship, partnership, and employment opportunities.
In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, emphasized that the fair is part of the university’s broader commitment to empowering young Nigerians to thrive in an increasingly competitive global workforce. He described this year’s theme, “Tech, Talent and Tomorrow: Preparing Nigerian Youth for Global Opportunities,” as a reflection of the institution’s mission to align education with innovation and employability.
Professor Adebowale stated that UI is determined to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that graduates leave with the skills, creativity, and confidence needed to lead and compete globally.
Also speaking, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Professor Oluyemisi A. Bamgbose, highlighted the importance of resilience, digital skills, and continuous learning. She noted that partnerships between universities and industry play a vital role in building a strong, innovative nation.
The keynote speaker, Chief Executive Officer of First Bank Plc, Olusegun Alebiosu, represented by his Technical Adviser, Akinsope Roberts, encouraged students to combine talent with hard work, discipline, and leadership. He stressed that Nigeria’s youths are not just the leaders of tomorrow but are capable of leading today as the global workplace continues to evolve through technological advancements.
Alebiosu urged the students to remain resilient and proactive, stating that Africa is projected to have the world’s largest workforce by 2030, making it necessary for young people to equip themselves to compete both locally and globally.
Organizations present at the fair included First Bank, Dangote Group, Aradel Holdings, GB Foods, MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and other major employers across various sectors.
