U.S. Resumes Student Visa Processing with New Social Media Requirement

The United States Department of State announced on Wednesday, June 18, that it has resumed processing student visa applications following a temporary suspension.

However, a new condition has been introduced: all applicants are now required to make their social media accounts publicly accessible for review.

In an official statement, the Department noted that consular officers will assess applicants’ social media activity for any content deemed hostile toward the United States—its government, institutions, culture, or foundational values.

Refusing to grant access to social media profiles may result in visa denial, as such actions could be interpreted as an attempt to hide questionable or concerning online behaviour.
