Two students from the University of Ibadan (UI) have emerged winners in the French Embassy’s “Get Creative with Plastic” Challenge, part of its Plastic Free Campus Awareness Initiative aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.
The university’s Director of Public Communication, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, announced the development in a statement released on Tuesday in Ibadan. She revealed that UI was one of 10 Nigerian universities selected to participate in the initiative, which was sponsored by the French Embassy Fund (FEF) Project.
The initiative was spearheaded by UI’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, and coordinated through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships), Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN, with support from other senior management members. Professor Aina Adeogun of the Department of Zoology served as the project’s focal person on campus.
According to Akinpelu, the university’s participation was marked by strong student involvement, with over 300 students actively engaged and nearly 100 creative submissions received. UI recorded the highest level of engagement among all participating institutions and became the only university with two winners.
Debbie Paul, a 300-level student from the Department of Environmental Health Science, Faculty of Public Health, won in the Music Category, while Adekunle Akorede, a 300-level student from the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, clinched victory in the Writing Category.
Akinpelu noted that the university’s outstanding performance highlights its leadership in sustainability efforts and its ongoing commitment to environmental advocacy and innovation.
