The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, has announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved N158 billion to advance the education sector in Nigeria, with a strong focus on technical and vocational education.

Prof. Ahmad disclosed this yesterday in Sokoto during the 42nd convocation and 50th anniversary of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. She explained that the funds would be deployed to boost Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), targeting at least 650,000 Nigerian youths with technical, vocational, and digital skills to prepare them for emerging labour and industrial demands.

She added that the federal government’s investment in education underscores its commitment to improving the welfare of young Nigerians. According to her, initiatives such as the ongoing provision of electricity to selected universities by the Rural Electrification Agency—including Usmanu Danfodiyo University—further demonstrate this resolve, as they aim to create a more conducive learning environment and enhance academic productivity.

As part of the celebrations, the university conferred honorary degrees on Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya (rtd.). Emeritus status was awarded to Prof. Dejo Abdulrahman, while several university facilities were named after distinguished individuals.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, who attended the ceremony, applauded the federal government’s renewed push to strengthen education. He stressed that education remains a key driver of economic growth and pledged his administration’s continuous support to the university. In a surprise gesture, he also gifted a Hajj seat to the best graduating student.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Garba Bashir, in his address, described the institution as a centre of excellence in teaching, research, and community service. He credited the dedication of past administrators, staff, students, and stakeholders for shaping the university’s achievements.

The golden jubilee and convocation drew dignitaries from across the country, including academics, government officials, and business leaders, who joined in celebrating the university’s legacy of academic excellence and national contribution.
