The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has revealed that it has invested more than N30 billion in strengthening security across tertiary institutions nationwide between January and now.
Aminu Masari, Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees (BoT) and former Governor of Katsina State, disclosed this in a statement issued Tuesday in Katsina.
Masari said the massive investment has already contributed to improved safety for students, lecturers, and other members of the academic community. He noted that the intervention aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring secure and conducive learning environments across Nigeria’s higher institutions.
“Just as we created a budget line for electricity, we also deemed it necessary to establish a dedicated line for security. Students and academic staff need a safe environment to carry out their activities,” he stated.
He explained that several institutions had applied for support to install solar-powered streetlights, perimeter fencing, and other safety-enhancing infrastructure. Masari commended President Tinubu for sustaining support for TETFund, especially with the approval of a 50 per cent Development Levy under the 2024 Nigerian Tax Bill.
“The development levy will take effect in January, and this will further strengthen the Fund’s capacity to deliver interventions,” he added.
Masari also highlighted that a recent town hall meeting was organised to provide stakeholders with updates on ongoing projects and to gather feedback that would guide future improvements in TETFund’s operations.
He noted that the forum brought together key players in the tertiary education sector, including policymakers, lawmakers, ASUU representatives, vice-chancellors, and students.
“We share ideas, receive suggestions, and work toward a more inclusive TETFund—one that develops policies reflecting the diverse interests across the tertiary education sub-sector,” he said.
According to him, the platform also serves to address pressing issues, with the overarching goal of positioning Nigerian tertiary institutions to compete globally in research, manpower development, and infrastructure.
