The Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, has called on the state government to maintain its commitment to strengthening infrastructure in the education sector, describing it as a critical tool for empowering citizens.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Yabagi Mohammed, the Speaker made the remarks while delivering the convocation lecture at the combined inaugural convocation of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, on Friday.
He expressed appreciation to the university’s management for selecting him to chair the institution’s first convocation ceremony, describing the event as a significant milestone for Kogi State and its pursuit of academic excellence. He noted that CUSTECH was built on strong pillars—teaching, research, innovation, mentorship, and equal opportunity—adding that the institution has already begun to fulfil its founding vision.
Rt. Hon. Yusuf commended former Governor Yahaya Bello for establishing both the University of Science and Technology and the Kogi State University, Kabba, initiatives he said expanded access to quality higher education across all senatorial districts while complementing the legacy of Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba.
He also praised Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for sustaining these achievements through stable academic operations and continued prioritization of education as a vehicle for empowerment. According to him, these efforts have brought higher education closer to citizens, created employment opportunities, and encouraged local professionals to contribute to the state’s development.
The Speaker thanked the Vice Chancellor and the academic and non-academic staff for their dedication, noting that their collective effort made the maiden convocation possible. Running a science and technology-focused university, he said, requires significant resources and vision—running three state universities demands even more courage and discipline. He commended the Governing Council for its leadership and the Vice Chancellor for steering the institution with focus and resilience.
He acknowledged the Guest Lecturer, former Ekiti State Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, for honoring the invitation and enriching the ceremony with valuable insights. He expressed optimism for deeper collaboration between Kogi and Ekiti states for national development.
Addressing the graduating students, the Speaker described them as pioneers and urged them to uphold integrity and excellence as ambassadors of CUSTECH. He reminded them that their achievements were borne out of merit and perseverance and encouraged them to remain disciplined, reject social vices, and contribute positively to society.
He appealed to the institution’s management, staff, and students to continue working harmoniously with the state government under Governor Ododo, emphasizing that collaboration would enhance effective education delivery.
Rt. Hon. Yusuf assured the gathering that the 8th Kogi State House of Assembly remains committed to providing strong legislative support to help the university grow and thrive.
