Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Senator Diket Plang, has extended warm congratulations to Professor Christopher Piwuna on his election as the new National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
In a statement, Senator Plang—who represents Plateau Central Senatorial District—described Professor Piwuna as a symbol of dedication and selfless service, especially within Nigeria’s academic community where he has taught and mentored students for over 20 years.
He praised Piwuna’s track record, recalling his time as the Chairman of ASUU’s University of Jos chapter, where he exhibited strong ethical values, effective negotiation skills, and genuine empathy. Senator Plang expressed confidence in Piwuna’s ability to build consensus and defend the interests of academic staff across the country.
“The union is indeed fortunate to have a principled, disciplined, and committed leader at this critical time,” he said. “The widespread support he received during the election is a clear reflection of the confidence ASUU members have in his leadership.”
Plang further expressed optimism that Piwuna’s tenure would mark a new chapter of constructive engagement between ASUU and the Federal Government, particularly on issues of mutual concern.
“I am confident that your wealth of experience and leadership capabilities will bring positive change to the union. Congratulations to you and all newly elected officials,” he added.
