The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Examination Bodies has pledged full legislative backing to strengthen examination bodies and help them effectively carry out their mandates.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Oforji Oboku, gave the assurance in Abuja during an oversight visit to the ongoing screening of underage candidates who scored high marks in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Oboku commended the exceptional performance of the young candidates, describing them as a source of national pride. “We are very proud of these children, and I know the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is equally proud of them. About 176 students across the country are taking this exam, showing that Nigeria is competing favourably in education with other countries in Africa,” he said.

He praised JAMB for maintaining high standards in the conduct of examinations, adding that the achievements of the underage candidates highlight the progress being made in Nigeria’s education sector.

Addressing the ongoing debate about the age limit for university admission, Oboku clarified that the policy was introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education, not JAMB. He, however, assured that the House of Representatives would review the policy as part of wider educational reforms.

Oboku reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting all examination bodies in improving standards, strengthening institutional integrity, and promoting merit-based advancement within the nation’s education system.
