A Professor of Systems and Distributed Systems at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Prof. Ayobami Ayeni, has called on the Federal Government to create a dedicated budget for research to enhance the quality of education in Nigerian universities.

Prof. Ayeni made the appeal on Friday while delivering the institution’s 22nd inaugural lecture titled, “The Road, The Path and The Way: The Algorithmic Structure of Life,” held at the university’s campus in Oyo.

The lecture, organized to highlight Prof. Ayeni’s academic achievements, underscored the critical role of research funding in driving educational excellence and national development.

“The provision of sufficient funding would not only elevate academic standards in both private and public universities but also contribute significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s economy,” Ayeni stated.

He also urged the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology to invest in world-class research centers, particularly to advance research in Information and Communication Technology.

Prof. Ayeni criticized the government for neglecting research in universities, emphasizing that appointing qualified professionals to lead the proposed research centers should be strictly based on merit.

Describing education as the cornerstone of national development, he stressed the importance of adopting research-driven approaches to evaluate students’ academic performance effectively.

He expressed gratitude to the management of Ajayi Crowther University for their unwavering support in helping him achieve his academic aspirations within the institution.
