Students of Oyo State in tertiary institutions across Nigeria, under the banner of the Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU), have expressed appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde for his continued support for education and student development.
Led by their National President, Ibrahim Alarape, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Victor Olojede, the students gathered at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan, for what they described as an appreciation rally. They hailed Governor Makinde as a student-friendly leader and called on him to consider running for the presidency in 2027.
In his address, Alarape commended the governor for implementing policies that uplift students and enhance their academic journeys. He described Makinde’s leadership as inspiring and pledged that students from Oyo State would continue to make the state proud with their academic achievements.
Responding to the students, Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to student welfare and quality education. He stated that his government is not only focused on infrastructure development but also on building strong institutions that will ensure good governance and sustainable progress long after his tenure ends.
The governor noted that the coming year is crucial for his administration, adding that he would not allow political distractions, including calls to contest for president, to shift his focus. He emphasized that his agenda remains rooted in the development of the state and its people.
Makinde highlighted that tackling poverty in Nigeria requires a focus on entrepreneurship, education, and productivity. He shared his personal experience as an entrepreneur and encouraged students to take risks, build skills, and invest in themselves to contribute meaningfully to the economy.
He dismissed claims that Nigerian youths are lazy, affirming instead that they are full of potential and energy. According to him, investments such as the installation of streetlights were designed to stimulate the local economy and empower small businesses.
The governor also touched on recent developments in the power sector, revealing that Oyo State has established its own Electricity Regulatory Commission to take charge of local power generation, transmission, and distribution. He assured the students that his administration would continue to implement policies that improve their lives and secure a brighter future for the state.
The event was attended by top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal; the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, mni; and other senior aides.
