Nigeria’s leading financial services provider, OPay, has extended its education and youth empowerment initiative to Benue State University (BSU), making the institution the seventh beneficiary of its ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship programme.

The scholarship scheme, aimed at supporting academic excellence and easing the financial burden on Nigerian students, is part of OPay’s broader commitment to national development through education. With the latest expansion to BSU, OPay continues its strategic efforts to invest in the country’s future leaders.

Speaking on the development, OPay’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Dauda Gotring, emphasized the transformative power of education. “We are proud to support these future leaders at Benue State University as part of our broader commitment to education and empowerment,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of Benue State University, Professor Tor Joe Iorapuu, described the donation as a significant milestone for the university. He noted that the scholarships would provide a vital support system for students, allowing them to focus more on their academic and personal development.

In a statement, OPay highlighted the broader impact of the initiative: “The beneficiaries are not just students; they represent the hopes of their families and communities. OPay is playing a pivotal role in ensuring their dreams are achieved.”

The initiative has already been successfully rolled out in six other Nigerian universities this year. With BSU now onboard, OPay reaffirmed its intention to expand the scholarship to more tertiary institutions across the country.

Launched in 2018, OPay has rapidly grown into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions, offering services such as money transfers, bill payments, airtime and data purchases, card services, and merchant payments. The company is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), providing the same level of coverage as commercial banks.

As the scholarship programme grows, more students from across Nigeria can expect to benefit from this life-changing initiative, underscoring OPay’s long-term commitment to education, inclusion, and national progress.
