A member of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has commended President Bola Tinubu and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for the establishment of three new federal tertiary institutions in the South-East.
President Tinubu recently signed into law three bills that establish the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences and the Federal College of Education in Bende, Abia State, as well as the Federal University in Okigwe, Imo State. Two of the bills were sponsored by Kalu, who also played a key role in securing presidential assent for the third.
In a statement made available to journalists, Onuigbo described the legislative milestone as a testament to visionary leadership and a strong commitment to educational and socio-economic development in the region.
“This legislative achievement is a clear demonstration of Kalu’s visionary leadership, deep commitment to educational development, and dedication to the socio-economic advancement of the South-East and the nation at large,” Onuigbo said.
He also praised President Tinubu for the swift approval of the bills, describing it as a reaffirmation of the administration’s dedication to inclusive development and youth empowerment through education.
“By this act, Mr. President, you have once again demonstrated your administration’s commitment to nation-building and empowering our youth. I doff my heart in appreciation,” he added.
Onuigbo noted that the establishment of the new institutions would not only improve access to higher education but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth in Abia and Imo states.
He further stated, “Without a doubt, Kalu’s legislative foresight and effective advocacy continue to inspire hope for a better future. His collaboration with the presidency is paving the way for future generations to gain access to quality education.”
The former lawmaker, who also sponsored Nigeria’s Climate Change Act, emphasized that the new schools would help prepare more young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to the global knowledge economy. He stressed that improving access to quality education is essential for developing homegrown solutions to challenges such as climate change and food insecurity.
Onuigbo currently serves as Chairman of the Security and Climate Change Committee on the NEDC Governing Board.
