Ogun State Suspends School Principals Over Illegal Fees and Student Protest

Ogun State

The Ogun State Government has suspended the principals of Ilugun High School, both the Junior and Senior arms, Mrs. Olukoga Adeyemi and Mrs. Ladipo Temitope, following allegations of illegal fee collection which triggered a violent protest by students.

In a viral video, students were seen vandalizing school property. Speaking on the matter, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, revealed that preliminary investigations are underway concerning the death of an unidentified individual believed to have been linked to the unrest.

According to him, the deceased appeared to have been illegally enrolled in the school, as he was identified with three different names – Babalola Ayornide, Salako Jimoh, and Afolabi Babalola – none of which could be traced in the state’s official education database, OGSERA, which validates student enrolments.

Professor Arigbabu confirmed that the Junior School principal, Mrs. Olukoga, was implicated in the collection of illegal levies. Consequently, both school heads were suspended to allow for further investigation.

He also announced the creation of a “Whistle Blowers” scheme by the government, through the Teaching Service Commission, to curb malpractices and ensure accountability in schools.

The Commissioner extended condolences to the bereaved family and reassured residents that Governor Dapo Abiodun’s administration remains committed to free education for all school-aged children in Ogun State, regardless of background, religion, or economic status.
