Members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti State chapter, on Monday staged a protest at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) to express their dissatisfaction with the leadership of the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina. They were joined by the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress members during the demonstration.
The protesters displayed placards calling for the removal of the Vice Chancellor and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba. NYCN State Chairman, Segun Bankole, said the group had submitted a petition to President Bola Tinubu outlining their allegations and concerns. He explained that the protest came after what they described as unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter through official channels. The youth groups also faulted the timetable for the selection of a new Vice Chancellor, claiming it was designed to favour a predetermined candidate.
In response, FUOYE’s Public Relations Officer, Foluso Ogunmodede, dismissed the allegations, describing them as unfounded.
Before the protest, the Students’ Union Government issued a warning against external groups staging demonstrations on campus. The SUG leadership maintained that the university should not be used as a venue for unauthorized gatherings and said it would act to prevent disruptions to academic activities.
Despite the caution, the protest proceeded. Bankole stated that the youth groups are demanding the suspension of the Vice Chancellor, the removal of the Governing Council Chairman, and a temporary halt to the ongoing process for appointing a new Vice Chancellor.
