The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) University, Lapai, following a series of armed robber attacks on students within the university community.
In a statement released on Wednesday night, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, said the decision was taken in response to recent security breaches and the unfortunate loss of lives, describing the situation as deeply concerning.
Expressing sympathy with the affected students and families, the government called on members of the university community to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies during the temporary closure.
“The safety and security of all citizens, including students, remain a top priority for the government,” the statement read. “The state government is working diligently to restore order, ensure the safety of all citizens, and maintain peace within the state.”
Usman also assured the public that a thorough investigation would be carried out into the incidents, and that those responsible for the attacks would be identified and prosecuted. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding law and order and protecting the lives and property of all residents in Niger State.
