Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has approved the reopening of all public and private schools across the state beginning Monday, January 12, 2026.
The directive was announced in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Bologi Ibrahim, who explained that the decision was reached after thorough consultations with relevant security agencies.
According to the statement, the move followed a detailed security evaluation and reflected the state government’s resolve to protect lives while ensuring that children continue to have access to quality education without disruption.
It clarified that only public and private day and boarding schools situated in areas deemed safe and secure are permitted to resume on the stated date. Schools located in areas considered unsafe will remain closed temporarily until such locations are properly assessed and cleared by the appropriate security authorities.
The governor further instructed school administrators to register all returning students and submit the compiled data to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education within one week of resumption to aid documentation and monitoring. Local Government Council chairmen were also directed to support the reopening process in their respective areas by working closely with security agencies to ensure adequate protection within and around school environments.
The statement added that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education would publish the official list of public and private schools approved to reopen on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Parents, guardians, school owners, and other key stakeholders were urged to strictly adhere to the guidelines in the collective interest of peace, safety, and sustainable educational development in Niger State.
While commending parents, school managers, and the general public for their patience and cooperation, the state government reiterated that the safety of students, teachers, and school communities remains its top priority, reaffirming its commitment to their protection.
