New Zealand will phase out paper applications for international student visas next month, as the government accelerates its transition to a fully digital immigration system. Starting from September 18, all applications for student visas must be submitted online through Immigration New Zealand’s upgraded platform, ADEPT.
The shift begins today, August 18, with applicants for English Language, Exchange, Fee-Paying, Pathway, New Zealand Government Scholarship, and Foreign Government Supported student visas now being automatically redirected to the digital system.
Applications submitted through the old platform before August 17 will still be processed, but any draft applications must be completed and lodged by September 17. After that date, incomplete drafts will be deleted, bringing hybrid processing to an end.
This development is part of “Our Future Services,” a seven-year modernization initiative led by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to centralize all visa applications under the ADEPT platform. Since its rollout in 2021, ADEPT has integrated several major visa categories and is now positioned as the backbone of a trusted, efficient immigration service.
Officials say the digital system is intended to reduce waiting times, improve communication, and enhance self-service for applicants. Updated information sheets and checklists are being provided to help education providers and visa agents adapt to the new process.
The timing is significant, as New Zealand experiences peak demand for student visas due to the rebound in international enrollments following the pandemic. Authorities have advised students to apply at least three months before their intended travel date to avoid disruptions that could affect their academic schedules.
Education is one of New Zealand’s most valuable export sectors, generating around NZ$3.7 billion annually prior to the 2020 border closures. Efficient visa processing is considered crucial to helping schools and universities remain competitive with countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK in attracting international students.
