A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Alhaji Mohammed Ndarani, has announced plans to sponsor 10 students to study Nupe Language at the university level, following the recent approval of the programme by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Speaking in an interview with journalists in Minna on Saturday, Ndarani said the scholarship would take effect once universities commence the Nupe Language degree programme approved by the NUC in 2025.
According to him, he has committed an undisclosed sum to fully fund the education of the selected students from 100 to 400 levels. He explained that the initiative was motivated by the persistent efforts of Nupe Language advocates who worked tirelessly to ensure the institutionalisation of the language at the tertiary level.
Ndarani described the approval of the programme as a historic milestone in the preservation of Nupe language and culture.
“We are fully prepared to support and formally unveil the Nupe Language degree programme once it begins,” he said.
He added that he would also encourage his associates and other well-meaning individuals to support the Nupe kingdom by sponsoring additional students. According to him, there are also plans to create opportunities for outstanding graduates of the programme to participate in international exchange programmes after completing their studies.
The legal luminary reaffirmed his commitment to human capital development, cultural preservation, and academic advancement in Nupe land and beyond. He noted that the scholarship would help boost enrolment in the programme, reduce the financial burden on students, and strengthen efforts to sustain indigenous languages through formal education.
The NUC’s approval of the Nupe Language degree programme has been widely celebrated as a major breakthrough, with Ndarani’s intervention expected to make a lasting positive impact on both the beneficiaries and the wider Nupe community.
