The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Ogbomoso North chapter, has urged governments at all levels to address the major challenges affecting private school owners and teachers in Nigeria, especially issues related to taxation, welfare, and access to financial support.
In a statement marking the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, the Chairman of NAPPS Ogbomoso North, Pastor Wale Ojewumi, described teachers as key contributors to national development who deserve more recognition and support. He commended teachers, particularly those in private schools, for their dedication and hard work in shaping future leaders.
Ojewumi explained that private schools are not in competition with government-owned institutions but rather complement government efforts to improve access to quality education.
He expressed concern over what he called an automatic 25% annual increase in personal income tax for private school proprietors, which, according to him, affects their ability to invest in teachers’ welfare and school facilities. He appealed to the government to review the policy to better reflect the realities faced by private school owners.
Ojewumi also called for the establishment of a welfare structure for private school teachers that includes access to healthcare, pensions, and fair remuneration. He noted that many teachers in private schools work under difficult conditions despite their essential role in the education system.
He further appealed to the government to provide financial support such as grants and low-interest loans to help private schools upgrade their facilities and maintain educational standards. Ojewumi also recommended that private school teachers be included in government-sponsored professional training programmes to improve their skills.
He reaffirmed NAPPS’ commitment to promoting education in Ogbomoso and across Nigeria, stressing that investment in both public and private education is vital to national growth and stability.
“Every investment in education, whether public or private, is an investment in our peace, prosperity, and future,” Ojewumi said, as he commended teachers across Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and Nigeria for their dedication to nation-building.
