Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has called on newly admitted students of Dorben Polytechnic to prioritize skill acquisition as a cornerstone of their academic and career pursuits. The Minister gave the charge during the 30th anniversary and 26th matriculation ceremony of the institution, held recently in Abuja.

Represented by Mrs. Olubisi Olagbenro, Deputy Director in the Department of Polytechnic Education and Allied Institutions, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Alausa praised Dorben Polytechnic for its continued efforts in expanding access to tertiary education for Nigerian youths.

He emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to promote education that equips students with marketable skills, noting that such training empowers individuals and reduces unemployment across the country.

“Education remains the bedrock of national development, and the focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is on technical and vocational training,” Alausa stated. “We are investing in skill development because it is the key to empowering a nation.”

He highlighted initiatives like the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), which mandates that every graduate of a tertiary institution must possess at least one employable skill. The Minister explained that such policies are aimed at producing self-reliant graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the economy.

On the challenge of funding education, Alausa assured students that the government is tackling the issue head-on through the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which provides financial assistance to support students’ academic pursuits.

“We are aware of the financial and security challenges confronting students. The government has introduced NELFUND to ease the financial burden and is working tirelessly to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment nationwide,” he said.

While commending the founder of Dorben Polytechnic, Dr. A.B. Ekwere, for his dedication to quality technical education, the Minister stressed the importance of partnership between government and private institutions to meet the growing demand for education.

He also urged students to stay away from anti-social behaviors such as cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and indecent dressing, reminding them that their time in school is not just for academic growth, but also for character development.

“Make the most of this opportunity. Embrace challenges with enthusiasm and focus on becoming the best in your chosen field,” the Minister advised.

In his address, Dr. A.B. Ekwere told the matriculating students that failure would be defined not just by grades but by a lack of excellence in their chosen career paths. He encouraged them to strive for distinction and to approach their studies with seriousness.

Also speaking at the event, the Rector of Dorben Polytechnic, Mrs. Uzu Oluyemisi Iyabo, described the institution as a “moulding ground” designed to shape individuals for economic and personal growth.

She highlighted the relevance of polytechnic education in today’s economy, particularly for industries in need of hands-on skills.

“Polytechnic education is tailored to meet industry demands. Our focus on practical training ensures that our graduates are highly employable and industry-ready,” she said.

Uzu reaffirmed the polytechnic’s commitment to nurturing students with technical expertise, urging the matriculants to stay committed to their studies and embrace every opportunity to learn.
