Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has secured over N100 million in research and innovation grants for 2025, supporting projects across engineering, technology, agriculture, and veterinary sciences.
Speaking at the university’s 13th convocation ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh highlighted that Dr. Mustapha Kabiru and Dr. Adesina Lambe Mutalub of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology won National Research Fund (NRF) grants totaling over N35 million.
In addition, Dr. Ololade Latifat Abdulrahman and Dr. Judith Adejoke Falola-Olasunkanmi from the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences were awarded $50,000 under the Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship, South Africa. Professor Jimoh noted that the duo were the only Nigerians among the 22 winners this year.
Highlighting the university’s commitment to fostering research among students, he added that 44 students received N100,000 each to conduct various research projects during the 14th Undergraduate Research Day, calling it a strategic investment in promising ideas and future breakthroughs.
The Vice-Chancellor also shared notable innovations by KWASU engineers, including the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles to electric, adaptations to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and the fabrication of a prototype electric vehicle from scratch. Some converted vehicles have already been handed over to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology, with more in progress.
KWASU has also been selected as a pilot institution for the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), establishing CNG conversion centres in Malete and Ilorin, and preparing to receive CNG buses and tricycles to improve campus mass transit.
In his remarks, the Visitor to the University, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, represented by Commissioner for Tertiary Education Saadatu Modibbo-Kawu, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to repositioning the education sector for excellence.
