The Kwara State Government has entered into a partnership with Webfala Digital Skills for All Initiative (WDSFAI) to establish Code Clubs across schools in the state, in a move aimed at equipping pupils with 21st-century digital skills and boosting STEM education.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Executive Director of WDSFAI, Nafisat Bakare, the programme will target learners between the ages of 8 and 16, introducing them to coding, robotics, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and safe digital practices. Supported by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the initiative is designed to improve digital literacy and prepare young learners for future opportunities in technology and innovation.
Bakare described the partnership as a major milestone in widening access to STEM education, especially for students from underserved communities. “With Code Clubs, children will not only learn coding and robotics but also the creativity and teamwork that will prepare them for the future,” she said.
The Director of Communications and Strategy at WDSFAI, Hameed Muritala, who also serves as Project Lead, disclosed that the Code Clubs would commence in selected schools across Kwara in the new academic session. He added that participating schools would be provided with free robotics kits, teacher training, mentorship, and access to broader STEM opportunities.
“With this project, we are laying a foundation that empowers children with digital skills early, giving them the confidence to innovate and compete globally. It will unlock the creative potential of young learners, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Muritala noted.
Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, welcomed the initiative, emphasising that it aligns with the state’s vision for STEM-driven education. He assured that the ministry would work closely with WDSFAI to facilitate access to schools and mobilise stakeholders to ensure the programme’s success and sustainability.
