Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has withdrawn 273 students due to poor academic performance and expelled six others for their involvement in examination misconduct.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, and made available to journalists in Lokoja.
According to the statement, the decision was part of the resolutions made during the 120th meeting of the Academic Board held on Thursday, April 17, at the Board Room of the Polytechnic’s Main Campus in Lokoja. The Chairman of the Board and Rector of the institution, Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, commended the Academic Board Result Verification Committee led by the Deputy Rector, Dr. Samuel Taiwo Olowo, for their thorough review of student results. He encouraged the committee to sustain the level of diligence in future evaluations.
Professor Usman, however, expressed concern over the poor performance of some students, which led to their withdrawal, despite the institution’s continued efforts to provide a conducive learning environment.
The withdrawals affected students across 20 departments and 42 academic programmes.
In a separate development, six students were expelled for various forms of examination misconduct. Their expulsion was approved following a report submitted by the Central Examination Misconduct Committee, chaired by Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Ehimony.
The Rector praised the Central Examination Misconduct Committee, as well as departmental and school-level committees, for their effective handling of disciplinary cases. He called for continued collaboration among all committees to ensure the institution maintains its standards in teaching and learning.
Professor Usman reassured members of the Polytechnic community of the Board and Management’s commitment to ongoing reforms aimed at improving the institution’s academic excellence. He also urged students to take advantage of the learning-friendly atmosphere and remain focused on their educational pursuits.
Meanwhile, all students affected by the withdrawal or expulsion have been directed to return all Polytechnic property in their possession, including identity cards, to the Security Unit before leaving the campus.
