The Kogi State Government has allocated N1.5 billion for the 2026 bursary scheme to support students of Kogi origin in tertiary institutions across the country.
The Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, announced this during the unveiling of the online registration portal in Lokoja. He urged all eligible undergraduates to take advantage of the initiative by registering and creating accounts on the platform to access the allowances, describing it as a demonstration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to student welfare.
Hon. Jones recalled that in the 2024/25 academic year, the governor also approved N1.5 billion for bursary payments. Out of over 400,000 applications received, only 8,170 students were successfully processed and paid due to the initial testing phase of the online system. He assured that the 2026 exercise would be more efficient, with improvements made to ensure wider coverage.
While presenting sensitisation materials to the leadership of the Kogi State Students Association, the Commissioner urged student union leaders to intensify awareness so that more beneficiaries can be reached compared to the previous year. He stressed that only those who complete their registration on the portal will be eligible for the bursary.
Demonstrating the simplified online registration process, the Executive Chairman of the Kogi State Scholarship Board, Mr. Afolabi Joseph, explained that students can now apply directly from their mobile phones, regardless of location.
In his response, the President of the National Association of Kogi State Students (NAKOSS), Comrade Sunday Adeola, pledged to lead a nationwide sensitisation campaign to mobilise students. He also expressed gratitude to Governor Ododo for prioritising the welfare of undergraduates across the state.
