The Katsina State Government has revoked the licences of all private and community schools operating across the state, in line with its new education reform policy.

This was disclosed in a circular issued by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa-Musawa, and released to the public in Katsina on Saturday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Malam Sani Danjuma.

According to the circular, all previously issued operational licences for private and community schools were terminated effective August 13, 2025, following approval by the State Executive Council. The decision, Musa-Musawa explained, is part of reforms aimed at ensuring quality assurance, standardisation, and effective regulation of teaching and learning in the state.

She recalled that on June 2, 2025, the ministry had conducted a sensitisation meeting with key stakeholders on the new policy governing private and community schools.

Under the revised policy, the state government has updated fees for licence applications, registration, annual renewals, and school upgrades. Proprietors are now required to submit payment receipts for new licences to the Department of Private and Community Schools, with all payments made directly into the state’s single treasury account. The deadline for compliance is September 30, 2025.

The commissioner stressed that the exercise is designed to strengthen supervision, promote accountability, and ensure the delivery of quality education in line with global best practices.

She further cautioned stakeholders that the revised licence and registration fees must not trigger any increase in school fees without the explicit approval of the ministry.

“Schools are expected to resume normal operations while the process of registration and licence renewal is ongoing. Further details, including categorisation of schools and the breakdown of revised fees, will be communicated to the National Association of Proprietors of Private and Community Schools,” Musa-Musawa said.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the future of children in Katsina State by upholding high standards and effective regulation across the education sector.
