The Kano State Government has revealed that it has renovated more than 1,200 public schools in the last two years, with more upgrades planned across all 484 wards in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, made this known on Monday at a one-day quality assurance workshop for education ministry staff and stakeholders held in Kano.

According to him, the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also approved N484 million for additional renovations — a project that involves elected councillors overseeing work in every ward.

“This is the first time in Kano’s history that such ward-based supervision and funding is being implemented. The renovation of over 1,200 schools across the 44 local governments reflects our commitment to revitalising education,” he said.

Mr. Makoda recalled that in May 2024, a state of emergency on education was declared, underscoring the government’s resolve to restore quality learning standards.

He added that the State Executive Council recently approved N3 billion for the renovation and reopening of 13 boarding schools for girls that were previously shut down.

Highlighting Kano’s unique position, he noted the state currently has over 30,000 schools, the highest in the country, and reaffirmed government’s dedication to providing accessible and quality education at all levels.

He described the workshop as crucial to the full rollout of the state’s free and compulsory basic and secondary education policy, adding that a strong quality assurance framework would help tackle systemic challenges and promote accountability.

The commissioner encouraged full participation and urged attendees to share the knowledge gained with schools and zones under their supervision.

Also speaking, Bashir Baffa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, confirmed that participants were drawn from across education agencies, including key stakeholders and chief executives.
