Future Nigeria Movement Faults ASUU Over Continued Use of Strikes

ASUU demands federal government action

Stakeholders under the Future Nigeria Movement (FNM) have criticized the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for what they described as its persistent reliance on strike actions as a tool for negotiation with the Federal Government.

In a statement signed by its National Leader, Livingstone Wechie, and released in Port Harcourt, the group described ASUU’s strategy as unpatriotic and harmful to national development, urging the union to adopt dialogue-based approaches instead of industrial actions.

“The recent declaration of a two-week warning strike will further drown the educational fortunes of what is left of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The group expressed concern that the strike was declared at a time when ASUU itself had admitted to a deepening intellectual crisis within public universities, following the exit of 309 professors nationwide a situation it described as an “intellectual haemorrhage” threatening the sector’s stability.

While calling on the Federal Government to consider ASUU’s demands as a national priority, FNM emphasized the need for both parties to embrace alternative dispute-resolution mechanisms to prevent further disruption of the country’s academic calendar.
